A devastating bus crash on a mountainous road in Bolivia has left the nation in mourning after more than 30 people lost their lives in one of the deadliest traffic accidents of the year. According to police, the crash occurred in the Yocalla district in the country’s southwest, when a passenger bus veered off the road and plunged nearly 800 meters (2,625 feet) into a ravine. The scale of the fall made rescue efforts extremely difficult, with emergency teams racing against time in treacherous terrain.

Authorities confirmed that at least 14 other passengers were injured in the crash, including four children. A video released by a local hospital official showed victims receiving urgent medical care, while officials warned that several of the injured remain in critical condition. The bus was traveling between the cities of Potosí and Oruro, a route known for its winding roads and steep drops, which often test even experienced drivers.

Police Colonel Victor Benavides told AFP that preliminary investigations suggest excessive speed may have played a major role in the tragedy. According to officials, the driver was reportedly unable to control the vehicle before it left the roadway. While the investigation is ongoing, authorities believe road conditions combined with speeding created a deadly scenario on the narrow mountain route.

Fatal road accidents are tragically common in Bolivia, particularly in high-altitude and mountainous regions. Just last month, another bus crash near Potosí claimed 19 lives. Government statistics show that in a country of roughly 12 million people, traffic accidents kill an average of 1,400 individuals each year. This latest disaster has renewed calls for stronger road safety measures, stricter speed enforcement, and improved transportation oversight to prevent future loss of life.
