At just 18 years old, Rhys Russell lost his life to a rare and aggressive form of melanoma. What began as a harmless red patch on his scalp quickly turned fatal. By the time doctors diagnosed it in late 2021, the cancer had silently advanced to stage four, spreading rapidly to his organs.
Rhys’ father, Oli—a nurse—now campaigns to challenge the myth that melanoma only threatens older adults or sun-lovers. “Rhys had no risk factors,” Oli said. “He was young, healthy, and full of life.”
In Rhys’ final moments, a Zoom call with his soccer idol, Jack Grealish, brought him comfort. The Manchester City star sent a heartfelt message and a signed shirt, honoring Rhys’ spirit.
Now, Rhys’ family is raising awareness and funds to fulfill his final wish: to have his ashes scattered at Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium memorial garden.
“Melanoma can strike anyone,” Oli urges. “Check your skin. Don’t wait.”
Their mission is clear: turn heartbreak into hope—because early detection saves lives.
