Fire Departments Issue Winter Warning on Space Heater Safety
As temperatures drop and households rely more on portable heaters, fire officials are urging the public to stay alert. Space heaters can offer welcome warmth, especially in drafty homes, but improper use continues to spark preventable house fires every winter.
One Critical Mistake to Avoid
Fire departments, including Umatilla County Fire District #1 and the Toledo Fire Department, stress one major rule: never plug a space heater into a power strip or extension cord. These accessories aren’t built to handle the heavy electrical load and can quickly overheat, melt, or ignite. Firefighters recall cases where a single overloaded strip led to couch fires and severe damage.
Placement Matters More Than You Think
Space heaters can reach temperatures near 600°F. Officials recommend keeping them at least three feet away from curtains, bedding, furniture, clothing, and decorations. Many fires start not from faulty heaters, but from everyday items placed too close.
Simple Habits That Save Lives
The Consumer Product Safety Commission links portable heaters to about 1,200 home fires each year. To reduce risk, firefighters advise reading instructions, inspecting cords, placing heaters on solid surfaces, and never leaving them unattended or running overnight.
With mindful use and basic precautions, families can stay warm without putting their homes at risk.
