When it comes to sex, many people feel pressure to measure their experiences against what’s considered “normal,” including how long sex should last. In reality, there’s no universal standard. Still, a recent survey by adult dating site Saucy Dates offers insight into how sex duration varies globally. The study surveyed 3,836 heterosexual adults aged 18 to 50 and focused specifically on intercourse, revealing both expectations and real-world experiences.
Across countries, men and women shared nearly identical expectations. Women said they would like sex to last an average of 25 minutes and 51 seconds, while men estimated 25 minutes and 43 seconds. However, actual experiences were far more varied, ranging from under a minute to an hour. The international average came in much lower, at approximately 15 minutes and 10 seconds, highlighting a clear gap between expectation and reality.
The survey also compared sex duration by country. The United States ranked highest, averaging 17 minutes and five seconds, followed closely by Canada at 17 minutes. The United Kingdom and Australia also exceeded the global average, while India fell slightly below it, though differences narrowed with age. Overall, people in their 30s tended to report the longest sessions, suggesting experience and comfort may play a role.
Experts emphasize that numbers alone don’t define sexual satisfaction. Psychologist Rachel Needle, Psy.D., and sexual health specialist Dr. Michael Krychman agree there is no “right” duration or frequency. Stress, life changes, and personal preferences all matter. What’s most important is communication and mutual satisfaction. Whether sex is brief or extended, intimacy works best when partners focus less on comparison and more on connection.
