Aging may be universal, but Ellen DeGeneres is drawing attention for how openly she’s addressing it. In her final Netflix stand-up special, For Your Approval, the longtime comedian, now 66, revealed a series of unexpected health diagnoses that emerged after she stepped away from daytime television. With her schedule finally slowed, DeGeneres said she visited doctors and learned she had osteoporosis and arthritis—conditions she hadn’t previously realized were affecting her body.
Reflecting on the discoveries, DeGeneres joked that she has “full-blown osteoporosis,” describing herself as “a sandcastle with legs.” She explained that a routine bone density test revealed how fragile her bones had become. Soon after, doctors also diagnosed her with arthritis, following sudden, intense pain she initially feared was a serious injury. Instead, she was told it was simply part of aging—a reality she approached with humor and honesty.
Beyond physical health, DeGeneres also shared deeply personal mental health revelations. While in therapy processing the backlash surrounding The Ellen DeGeneres Show, she was diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. Raised in a household where illness wasn’t openly discussed, she said the diagnoses helped her better understand lifelong behaviors—and even recognize similar traits in her late father.
As always, humor remained her coping mechanism. DeGeneres joked that her ADHD made finishing the special a challenge and that her OCD and distractibility oddly balance each other out. While comedy drives the narrative, her candid approach offers a rare, human look at aging, mental health, and self-awareness—proving that vulnerability, when paired with humor, can still resonate powerfully with audiences.
