Texas Congressman Tony Gonzales Ends Reelection Bid Amid Growing Scandal
Texas Congressman Tony Gonzales faced intense political pressure during a heated Republican primary that quickly turned into a national controversy. The lawmaker came under scrutiny after reports surfaced about late-night text exchanges with a staff member, Regina Ann Santos-Aviles, who worked in his regional district office in Uvalde. According to messages reported by the San Antonio Express-News, Gonzales allegedly asked the staffer to send him a “sexy pic,” sparking allegations of inappropriate conduct. Under U.S. House ethics rules, lawmakers are prohibited from engaging in romantic relationships with employees.
The controversy deepened after the tragic death of Santos-Aviles in September 2025. Her husband, Adrian Aviles, later spoke publicly, accusing the congressman of abusing his authority. Attorney Bobby Barrera also alleged Gonzales coerced the staffer into a relationship. Gonzales denied those claims and accused the family’s legal team of attempting to extort him through a proposed settlement request.
Amid mounting criticism from fellow Republicans, including Lauren Boebert and Thomas Massie, Gonzales ultimately announced he would not seek reelection. In a public statement, he said he would finish his current term while continuing to serve his constituents. Meanwhile, the U.S. House Committee on Ethics has launched an investigation to determine whether the congressman violated official conduct rules.
