Michigan Man Rebuilds Life After Rare Cancer Destroys Half His Face
Tim McGrath’s journey is a testament to resilience. The Michigan native was diagnosed in 2014 with synovial sarcoma—a rare and aggressive cancer—after experiencing persistent jaw pain. Hoping to avoid surgery, he initially tried alternative treatments like strict diets and energy healing. But the tumor kept growing. By 2015, Tim required a tracheotomy and feeding tube, and chemotherapy proved ineffective.
Radiation eventually shrank the tumor enough for surgery, and in October 2015, doctors performed a grueling 30-hour operation. When Tim awoke, the worst had happened—he had lost half his face, including his jaw, eye, and ear.
Early reconstruction attempts failed as his body rejected implants. But hope returned in 2022 when Dr. Kongkrit Chaiyasate used tissue from Tim’s leg, arm, and forehead to begin rebuilding his face. After five successful surgeries, Tim is now cancer-free and focused on recovery—learning to speak, eat, and smile again.
“I’ve learned that I’m more than my appearance,” Tim says. “If my story helps even one person, it’s all worth it.”
