Charles Barkley Recalls Legendary Michael Jordan Story: “He Played 36 Holes, Then Locked Down Puerto Rico’s Point Guard”

Michael Jordan’s competitiveness is the stuff of legend—and Charles Barkley recently shared a tale that perfectly sums it up.

On the TNT Steam Room podcast, Barkley recalled a moment from the 1992 Tournament of the Americas, a pre-Olympic warm-up for the original Dream Team in Portland. That morning, Jordan played 18 holes of golf with Barkley, David Robinson, and coach Chuck Daly. When they finished, MJ didn’t head back to rest—he went for another solo round.

“This is when I knew Michael Jordan was crazy,” Barkley laughed. “He’s the most competitive person I’ve ever been around.”

Later that day, Team USA was set to face Puerto Rico. Before the game, Coach Daly handed out defensive assignments. When Daly told Jordan to guard the shooting guard, Jordan refused.

“I got the point guard,” Jordan said. “He talked [expletive] about me in the paper. I’m going to get him.”

Jordan had played 36 holes that day—but he smothered the Puerto Rican point guard as if it were Game 7 of the NBA Finals. The U.S. cruised to a 119–81 win, and Jordan didn’t even let the kid breathe, let alone score.

A petty grudge? Maybe. But for Jordan, even a random quote from a little-known opponent was fuel for domination.
