Brave Queensland Mum Shields Baby from Golf Ball-Sized Hail in Terrifying Storm
Fiona Simpson, a 23-year-old mother from Queensland, became a symbol of courage after protecting her baby during a vicious hailstorm that shattered her car windows. While driving on the D’Aguilar Highway with her four-month-old daughter and grandmother, Simpson was caught in a supercell storm that battered southeast Queensland.
As the hail intensified, she pulled over to wait it out. But the storm quickly turned violent—golf ball-sized hailstones smashed through her car windows, leaving her little time to react.
“I covered my infant with my body to stop her from getting badly injured,” she wrote in a now-viral Facebook post, accompanied by images of her bruised back, arms, and head.
Her baby suffered only minor bumps, and her grandmother was hospitalized with arm injuries. Once the storm subsided, Simpson ran to a nearby house screaming for help, and an ambulance was called.
More than 9,000 properties lost power as the tornado-strength storm caused widespread damage. Simpson’s warning to others: “Never drive during a hailstorm—it’s not worth the risk.”
