Washington, D.C. has been thrown into political turmoil after Donald Trump unveiled a month-long federal takeover of the city’s Metropolitan Police Department — a move critics call “unprecedented” and “dangerously authoritarian.”
The president’s “no Mr. Nice Guy” plan brings 800 National Guard troops to patrol the streets and orders all homeless encampments to clear out “IMMEDIATELY.” On Truth Social, Trump painted the city as a haven for “illegal alien criminals” and vowed to restore it to “the most beautiful Capital in the World.” He even claimed D.C.’s homicide rate outpaces Bogotá and Mexico City — despite FBI data showing violent crime at a 30-year low.
His most incendiary remark came at a White House press briefing: “You spit, and we hit, and they can hit real hard.” Social media erupted, with one Reddit user warning, “The Trump police state is upon us.”
Mayor Muriel Bowser blasted the move as an “unsettling overreach” that her office never requested. Legal experts note Trump invoked Section 740 of the Home Rule Act, but many fear this sets a dangerous precedent for other cities.
