Florida Woman Loses Eye After Freak Leash Accident

A Florida woman, Daniella Abreu, tragically lost her right eye following a freak accident while walking her dog. On August 7, 2023, Daniella took her 30kg husky, Blue, for a nighttime stroll using an older retractable leash after her regular rope one wore out.

During the walk, Blue spotted a rabbit and bolted, causing the leash to snap back violently. The handle struck Daniella in the face, severely injuring her right eye. “I knew immediately it was bad,” she recalled. The impact left her eyelid split, a fractured bone beneath her eye, and a detached retina.

She was rushed to a trauma center and later underwent multiple surgeries in Miami. Despite doctors’ efforts, Daniella was declared permanently blind in her right eye, which had to be removed.

The once-active 24-year-old faced months of recovery, enduring PTSD, migraines, and anxiety. Now fitted with a prosthetic eye, she is supported by a GoFundMe campaign to aid her rehabilitation and ongoing therapy.

“I had to put my life on pause,” Daniella said.
