Florida Good Samaritan Cleared After Shooting Attacker
A Florida passerby who intervened during an attack on a sheriff’s deputy will not face criminal charges.
Ashad Russell, 35, came to the aid of Lee County Sheriff’s Deputy First Class Dean Bardes when Edward Strother, 53, attacked him on Interstate 75 after being pulled over for speeding. Strother allegedly pinned Bardes to the ground and repeatedly punched him.
Russell, who holds a concealed carry license, was armed and followed the deputy’s instructions to use his gun. After warning Strother to stop, Russell shot him three times in the neck, resulting in Strother’s death.
Lee County Sheriff Mike Scott praised Russell on Facebook, calling him a “hero” for stopping the threat and emphasizing that “all life matters,” while noting Russell’s actions transcended racial lines in a tense social climate.
The State Attorney’s Office confirmed Russell was justified, stating he reasonably believed deadly force was necessary to prevent imminent death or great bodily harm to Deputy Bardes.
However, Strother’s brother, Louis, questioned the decision, asking, “Was my brother armed?” highlighting the ongoing debate over the incident.
No further legal action will be taken against Russell.
