Music Legend Kinky Friedman Passes Away at 79
The music world is mourning the loss of Kinky Friedman, the legendary singer-songwriter, humorist, and political maverick, who passed away at 79. Known for his razor-sharp wit and satirical brilliance, Friedman redefined country music in the 1970s with his bold, unconventional style.
Friedman first rose to fame with his satirical band Kinky Friedman and the Texas Jewboys, delivering unforgettable hits like “They Ain’t Makin’ Jews Like Jesus Anymore” and “Get Your Biscuits in the Oven and Your Buns in the Bed.” His provocative lyrics and fearless performances earned him both controversy and acclaim.
He later joined Bob Dylan on a two-year tour, solidifying his place as one of music’s most original voices. Beyond music, Friedman made waves in politics, famously running for Texas governor in 2006 and later pursuing roles in agriculture.
Close friend Clive Hattersley revealed Friedman had quietly battled Parkinson’s in recent years. With 18 albums, including his final work Circus of Life (2018), Kinky Friedman leaves behind a legacy of wit, courage, and unapologetic authenticity.
“He made us laugh, think, and feel — sometimes all at once.”
