From Pain to Power: Michelle Hughes’ Incredible Journey with Rare Cancer
Michelle Hughes thought her lingering rib pain was just another pregnancy symptom. But for five years, behind stable scans and benign labels, something deadly was growing—epithelioid hemangioendothelioma (EHE), a rare and incurable cancer.
Discomfort turned to collapse shortly after giving birth to her third child. Doctors discovered her lungs full of tumors and her liver riddled with cysts. The “harmless” mass dismissed for years was actually Stage 4 cancer.
“I was told I had months to live,” Michelle recalled. But she refused to surrender.
With three young children and no clear treatment path, she chose purpose over panic. Inspired by a joyful cancer survivor online, Michelle began running—first on a treadmill, then outside with a stroller. She went on to complete a full triathlon on the third anniversary of her diagnosis.
Her honesty and resilience transformed her private journal into a global Instagram community of over 400K. “I chase joy,” she says. “Even 30 seconds a day.”
Now, she dreams not of years—but of moments. Like seeing her son board the school bus for the first time.
“I may be dying,” Michelle says, “but I’m not done living.”
