Indian Farmer Ignores Neck Lump for 20 Years, Undergoes Life-Saving Surgery
For two decades, 55-year-old Somai, a farmer from Basti in Uttar Pradesh, India, dismissed a lump on his neck, believing it to be an enlarged thyroid. But when he finally sought medical attention, doctors discovered it was a submandibular tumor — dangerously pressing against his carotid arteries.
“The patient visited our outpatient department on July 12, and we admitted him,” said Dr. Onkar Vedak of King George’s Medical University Hospital in Lucknow.
After urgent scans, the surgical team decided immediate action was necessary. On July 13, doctors performed a complex four-hour surgery to remove the mass. The tumor’s location, near vital carotid arteries that supply blood to the brain and face, made the operation especially delicate.
“It was a submandibular tumor and was pressing hard on the carotid arteries,” Dr. Vedak explained.
Somai is expected to be discharged soon and is now recovering well. His story is a powerful reminder: don’t ignore persistent health issues. Early diagnosis can save lives.
