Virsavia Borun: Defying the Odds with an Open Heart
At just 14, Virsavia Borun is inspiring the world. Born with her heart outside her chest due to a rare condition called pentalogy of Cantrell—affecting only one in a million people—doctors initially did not expect her to survive birth, let alone childhood. Despite warnings that she might not live past 30, her mother, Dari, remains unwavering in her belief.
“It’s not so much a miracle as it is my mother’s love,” Virsavia says. “My mother believed; I don’t think it’s anything else.”
Her condition leaves her heart unprotected, with no rib cage or abdominal muscles. To stay safe, she wears a protective breastplate and soft clothing. Yet Virsavia’s spirit is undimmed—she enjoys dancing, drawing, pony rides, and listening to Beyoncé.
Dari acknowledges the challenges:
“It’s not easy for Bathsheba to live with her heart on the outside… there are times we feel anxious, realizing how vulnerable she is.”
Among just 250 known cases worldwide, Virsavia continues to defy expectations, living life with courage, joy, and the unwavering support of her family.
