Riley Gaines Sparks Debate Over WNBA Stars Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese
In a fiery statement, activist and former NCAA swimmer Riley Gaines criticized WNBA star Angel Reese, accusing her of playing the victim while Caitlin Clark carries the weight of a struggling league. Gaines argued, “Angel Reese isn’t the one being pushed to the floor every game… Caitlin Clark is. And yet somehow, Reese keeps making this about herself.”
Clark, the Indiana Fever’s No. 1 draft pick, arrived with immense hype but has faced aggressive play, limited league marketing, and exclusion from Team USA’s initial Olympic roster. Meanwhile, Reese, known for her outspoken nature, retweeted memes mocking Clark and hinted at “white privilege” and media favoritism.
Gaines condemned what she calls the “weaponization of victimhood” undermining women’s sports progress: “Caitlin Clark didn’t ask to be the face of the league. She earned it.” Despite fluctuating WNBA ratings, Clark remains the league’s top draw.
Reese responded defiantly: “They want me to shut up and smile. I’ll never be that girl.” The ongoing tension highlights deeper issues of fairness, media bias, and how women athletes are celebrated and criticized.
