When Elisabeth, a 34-year-old lawyer, joined OkCupid in May 2014, she did so with little optimism. Like many people, she had learned that online dating can be discouraging. For plus-size women, the experience is often even harsher, shaped by shallow judgments and unrealistic expectations. After years of carefully polishing her image online with little success, Elisabeth felt exhausted by a system that rarely felt welcoming or fair.

Her mindset shifted when a close friend, newly divorced, asked several former bridesmaids to join dating apps together for moral support. Instead of refining her profile yet again, Elisabeth chose a radically different approach. She decided to create what she called “the most obnoxious version” of herself—one that was honest, playful, and entirely unfiltered. The pressure to appear perfect was gone, replaced with authenticity and humor.

Her profile proudly featured photos of her with her cat and candid descriptions of her quirks, boundaries, and values. Most importantly, she was upfront about her body. Elisabeth openly stated that she is fat, wearing sizes XL to 2XL in dresses and sizes 16 to 20 in pants. Rather than hiding or minimizing this fact, she presented it confidently, refusing to perform a more “acceptable” version of herself for strangers online.

Reflecting on her experience, Elisabeth explained the trap many fat women fall into while online dating. Strategic angles, flattering lighting, and careful styling can disguise reality—but only temporarily. “You don’t get all of those factors when you meet someone in person,” she noted. By embracing honesty from the start, Elisabeth rejected unrealistic expectations and reclaimed control over her dating narrative, proving that confidence and transparency can be powerful filters in the modern dating world.
