Anne Glancey, an elderly woman from New Jersey, recently became the center of a heartwarming story of community compassion. Unable to maintain her home, Glancey’s neighbors, led by Kristin and Adam Polhemus, along with dedicated volunteers, stepped in to transform her situation. Their selfless efforts not only repaired Glancey’s home but also revitalized her spirit.
Kristin and Adam Polhemus, residents of Hamilton, New Jersey, took the initiative to restore Glancey’s home alongside 20 volunteers. They learned about her predicament through the sellers of their own home. Reflecting on the effort, Kristin shared, “Anne was, and is, extremely grateful for our dedication to her property and her soul. The project has inspired her to continue improving her home, inside and out, and it established new relationships between Anne and our neighbors.”
Glancey had received multiple violations from the local municipality due to her home’s deteriorating condition, ranging from an abandoned vehicle in her driveway to overgrown lawns and peeling paint. The potential fines were substantial, particularly concerning for someone in her situation. Kristin highlighted their motivation, stating, “In life, we are called to love our neighbors as ourselves. We wanted to help her out of an act of love.”
Kristin, Adam, and a group of friends, family, and church members dedicated six days to transforming Glancey’s home. They worked tirelessly, personally procuring supplies and performing various tasks, including structural repairs, painting, and landscaping. Their efforts even extended to donating Glancey’s car.
Adam Polhemus confirmed that all charges against Glancey had been dropped by the city. Kristin added, “None of us wanted any recognition for this project. We hope everyone reading this will look at their neighborhoods with new eyes. What needs fixing? Who needs a friend or companion? Your neighbors are just family members you don’t know well yet. The relationship starts with you. It may not be easy, but it will be worth it.”
