Deaf hiker falls 700 feet, but when rescuers finally find her, she isn’t alone

Being young often means chasing adventure, exploring new places, and testing personal limits. For 21-year-old Amelia Milling, that spirit led her to Alaska, where she set out on a solo mountain hike. Deaf and undeterred by challenges, Amelia chose a three-day trek through rugged terrain. What began as an exciting journey quickly turned dangerous when she lost her footing on a snow-covered slope.

Amelia slid more than 600 feet down the mountain, crashing into rocks before coming to a stop. Miraculously, she avoided broken bones and could still walk, but she was badly shaken, freezing, and completely lost. After more than 24 hours alone in the wilderness, hope appeared in an unexpected form when she spotted what looked like a white wolf approaching her position.

The animal turned out to be Nanook, a trained husky trail guide wearing a collar marked “guide.” Nanook stayed with Amelia overnight, helped her find the trail, and later saved her again by pulling her from a fast-moving river. After Amelia activated her GPS beacon, rescuers arrived by helicopter. Though safely airlifted home, Amelia credits Nanook as the true hero of her survival.
