Former President Donald Trump has been formally indicted on several federal charges related to the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. On Thursday, he was charged with conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, obstruction and attempted obstruction of an official proceeding, and conspiracy to violate constitutionally protected rights.
These charges stem from Trump’s alleged efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election and his role in inciting the violent storming of the Capitol by his supporters. The indictment marks a significant development in the ongoing investigation into the events that shook American democracy.
Special Counsel Jack Smith, who is overseeing the case, emphasized that the investigation focuses on holding accountable those responsible for undermining the electoral process.
“The attack on our nation’s Capitol was fueled by lies,” Smith said during a press briefing.
The case adds to a growing list of legal challenges facing Trump as he campaigns for a return to the presidency in 2024.
