The Infancy Gospel of Thomas Reveals a Surprising Side of Young Jesus

Even after 2,000 years, the Bible continues to reveal new insights. One such discovery, the Infancy Gospel of Thomas, challenges traditional perceptions of Jesus, portraying him not only performing miracles but also showing a darker, more human side.

The text describes Jesus as a child performing astonishing feats, such as bringing clay birds to life, drawing water from a broken pitcher, and healing injuries. Yet it also depicts him as temperamental: “When Joseph saw that Jesus had done such a thing, he got angry… The boy became infuriated and replied, ‘Don’t make me upset.’”

At just five years old—far younger than the Bible’s depiction of Jesus at 12—the gospel shows his divine powers paired with stubbornness and mischief. One passage even portrays him laughing at a teacher’s attempts to instruct him: “You say what you know; but I know more than you, for I am before the ages.”

Early church leaders rejected the text due to these controversial depictions, but the gospel offers a unique lens on Jesus’ early life, blending miraculous acts with human traits.
