Husband Lays on Couch All Day Ignoring Wife’s Pleas for Help until Ambulance Takes Her Away — Story of the Day

Richard Franklin had once been a successful travel agent, but after the pandemic destroyed his business, he withdrew from life and settled into bitterness. He spent his days on the couch gaming, drinking, and leaving every household responsibility to his wife, Sharon. While she worked nonstop as a software developer to keep their home afloat, he refused to lift a finger unless she paid him. Whenever she asked for basic help, he mocked her, insisting he wasn’t “a cleaning lady.” Sharon carried the weight of their entire life in silence, growing more exhausted as Richard sank deeper into entitlement and resentment.

When Richard’s friend announced a bachelor trip to Las Vegas, Richard demanded two thousand dollars from Sharon. She calmly refused, explaining she had hired a cleaning service since he refused to help. Furious, Richard sold her most cherished possession — a rare Art Deco Lalique vase inherited from her grandmother. When Sharon discovered it was gone, she collapsed under the shock and stress. Richard ignored her for hours, assuming she was being dramatic, until paramedics arrived and announced she was in cardiac arrest. For the first time, he faced the magnitude of his cruelty.

Shaken by the possibility of losing the woman who had carried him through his darkest years, Richard followed the ambulance and waited through the night. His anger, laziness, and selfishness suddenly looked monstrous in the harsh light of her fragility. He realized that Sharon had loved him fiercely while he had offered nothing in return. The near loss forced him to confront the man he had become — bitter, careless, and undeserving of her devotion.

The next morning, Richard returned to the hospital with a restored version of her vase and lilies-of-the-valley. He apologized with genuine remorse, begging Sharon for forgiveness. Recovery was slow, but Richard changed completely, reclaiming responsibility, rebuilding trust, and becoming — finally — the husband she had needed all along.
