A Mother’s Mission: Turning Grief into Awareness After Losing Her Son to SIDS
Kyrstyn Johnson cherishes motherhood. In 2015, she welcomed premature twin girls who overcame early health risks and grew up strong. Two years later, she gave birth to a vibrant baby boy, Mayson Michael, who was full of life and joy.
But just days before his 8-month milestone, tragedy struck. Mayson unexpectedly stopped breathing and passed away from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)—a devastating, unexplained loss that shattered Kyrstyn’s world.
“You never think it’ll happen to you. Then, everything changes,” she shared.
Overwhelmed with grief, Kyrstyn struggled with mental health but chose to channel her pain into purpose. She now dedicates her life to raising SIDS awareness, emphasizing the importance of safe sleep practices, like always placing babies on their backs.
“If sharing Mayson’s story can save just one child, his life will always have meaning,” Kyrstyn says.
Today, she honors her son by spreading compassion and reminding others that many walk through invisible sorrow.
“Be kind. You never know someone’s story.”
