Stephen A. Smith Criticizes New NBA All-Star Game Format
The NBA’s revamped All-Star Game format for the 2024-25 season has sparked a wave of reactions, with ESPN analyst Stephen A. Smith leading the charge against it. Known for his bold opinions, Smith slammed the changes as a betrayal of tradition and legacy.
“It’s a Disgrace to NBA Pioneers”
Smith was unrelenting in his criticism, particularly targeting the lack of intensity in recent All-Star Games. Referring to the new four-team tournament-style format, he said:
“I hate it. It’s a complete waste of time… an insult and a disgrace to pioneers who have helped elevate the NBA product to what it is… I personally have no interest in even being there.”
Smith’s frustration stems from what he sees as the dilution of the All-Star Game’s significance, further exemplified by last season’s 211-186 blowout—a record-breaking yet widely criticized scoring fest.
How Does the New Format Work?
Under the new structure, the All-Star Game will feature a four-team tournament. Three teams of eight All-Stars will join the Rising Stars Challenge winner. The tournament includes:
- Semifinals: Two games played to 40 points.
- Final: Played to 25 points.
This format aims to emulate a “pickup basketball” feel, with stars like Stephen Curry contributing to its development. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver emphasized the need for a more competitive and entertaining event after last season’s lackluster effort.
“We all want to do a better job providing competition and entertainment for our fans,” Silver said.
Mixed Reactions to the Change
While some fans and players are optimistic about the fresh approach, Smith sees it as a departure from the All-Star Game’s legacy. As the 2024-25 All-Star Weekend approaches at Chase Center in San Francisco, the NBA’s experiment will be under intense scrutiny. Whether the new format reinvigorates the event or faces further backlash remains to be seen.
