Cameron Underwood’s Life After a Historic Face Transplant
Cameron Underwood of Yuba City, California, is making an inspiring recovery less than a year after undergoing a groundbreaking 25-hour face transplant. In 2016, Cameron survived a suicide attempt that left him with severe facial injuries, including the loss of his nose, lower jaw, and teeth.
A Second Chance Through Innovation
Thanks to his mother’s determination and the expertise of Dr. Eduardo Rodriguez at NYU Langone Medical Center, Cameron received a face transplant in January. Before that, he underwent traditional reconstructive procedures. The complex operation was led by a 100-member surgical team and enhanced with 3D-printed planning, making it one of the most advanced surgeries of its kind.
Gratitude and Healing
Cameron expressed heartfelt thanks to Dr. Rodriguez, his team, and the family of Will Fisher—the organ donor and aspiring filmmaker who made the surgery possible.
“I’m so grateful for this second chance at life,” Cameron shared.
Unlike many others, Cameron received help soon after his injury, which spared him years of psychological trauma and sped up his emotional recovery.
