Wilmington Vet Clinic Explosion: Leaders Thankful Lives Were Spared

WILMINGTON, N.C. — Two days after a massive explosion leveled the Eastern Carolina Veterinary Medical Center on New Centre Drive, hospital administrator Gary Walker is reflecting on what he calls a “surreal” tragedy.

The blast, triggered when a driver struck a gas line, injured five firefighters Tuesday afternoon. Minutes after the collision, the $24 million facility—four years in the making and just weeks from opening—was destroyed.

Walker said alarms first went off at the site, but he assumed it was routine. Then came word of the crash, followed by the explosion as he drove from their Greenville Avenue location. “I was thinking we’re really lucky they’re not carrying out body bags right now,” he recalled.

Remarkably, no staff were inside. A meeting at the other clinic ran long, delaying their arrival. Only three construction workers were on-site, and one HVAC crew member’s quick call to evacuate may have saved lives.

Despite the loss, Walker says, “There’s no replacing a life.” He credits firefighters, police, and first responders—and vows the clinic will rebuild, one step at a time.
