Luka Dončić Signs $165M Extension as Lakers Signal Post-LeBron Future
The Los Angeles Lakers just made their vision clear: Luka Dončić is the future. But what does that mean for LeBron James?
Dončić has signed a three-year, $165 million max extension with a player option in 2028, confirmed by agent Bill Duffy. If he re-signs afterward, the superstar guard could pocket a staggering $417 million over the next eight seasons.
“Excited to keep working to bring championships to LA and make Laker Nation proud. This is just the beginning,” Dončić posted on X. He also pledged $5 million to support 77 young athletes worldwide, expanding his influence beyond the court.
But while Lakers Nation celebrates, questions about LeBron’s future loom. At 41 this December, James will earn $56 million this season. Despite a recent two-year deal, it’s clear the franchise is shifting focus.
General manager Rob Pelinka summed it up: “Above all else, Luka will lead our franchise to pursue future championships.”
The blueprint is obvious—Dončić as cornerstone, surrounded by youth and athleticism, with a five-to-ten-year title window. For LeBron, the role looks less like centerpiece and more like bridge.
The future in Los Angeles belongs to Luka Dončić.
