Small red dots keep spreading on my lower legs, and I can’t get checked yet. What can I do now?

Noticing small red spots spreading across your lower legs can be alarming, especially if you can’t see a doctor right away. These marks can have many causes, ranging from harmless skin reactions to conditions that need medical attention. The first step is ruling out an emergency. Seek urgent care if the spots appear suddenly in large numbers, follow an injury, or are paired with severe pain, swelling, fever, bruising, or unexplained bleeding. If they’re painless, slow to change, and not linked to other symptoms, careful monitoring at home is usually reasonable.

The spots may be petechiae—tiny red or purple dots caused by small blood vessels leaking under the skin. One possible explanation is Schamberg disease, a mild and usually harmless condition affecting the lower legs. Other causes include allergies, circulation issues, infections, or inflammation. Pressing gently on a spot to see if it fades, tracking changes, and taking dated photos can help you understand what’s happening.

In the meantime, avoid tight clothing, limit heat exposure, moisturize with fragrance-free products, and elevate your legs when resting. Stay hydrated, keep activity gentle, and log any changes to share with a healthcare provider when you’re able to get checked.
