The July 23 ad featured Sweeney in denim with the tagline, “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans.” Critics claimed the wordplay on “genes” referenced eugenics, sparking heated online debates about race and beauty standards.

American Eagle defended the campaign on Instagram, stating:

“This was always about the jeans—her jeans, her story. Great jeans look good on everyone.”

The controversy caught even Donald Trump’s attention, with the former president praising the ad as “HOTTEST” and noting the jeans were “flying off the shelves.”

This isn’t Sweeney’s first brush with political speculation—her 2022 family party drew similar chatter. She later told British GQ: “Honestly, nothing I say can take it back to the correct track.”
