THE CEO PRETENDS TO BE A NEW EMPLOYEE AT HIS OWN FAST FOOD RESTAURANT—HE SEES HOW A WORKER TREATS NEWBIES

Damian Valencia, CEO and owner of the popular fast-food chain Valencia’s, began receiving troubling complaints about the Sta. Lucia branch—specifically about a senior employee who was allegedly mistreating new hires. Instead of sending an auditor, he decided to investigate personally. Disguised as a new crew member named Dan, he arrived wearing a standard uniform and quietly blended in. Grace, the supervisor, greeted him politely, but Rowena, a 52-year-old long-time employee, immediately barked orders at him and treated him like dirt. Damian noticed she wasn’t just harsh with him—new hires were constantly belittled, scolded, and even pushed to tears by her aggressive attitude.

Over the next few days, Damian continued observing silently. Rowena refused to help with tasks, ordered others around, and even demanded drinks while sitting idly at a table. When a nervous trainee arrived, she publicly humiliated the young worker. Damian finally stepped in to comfort the trainee, still keeping his identity hidden. Rowena snapped at both of them, unaware that the “newbie” she was bullying was actually her company’s CEO. Damian continued gathering evidence until the day the staff was told an “auditor” would arrive for a surprise evaluation.

During the meeting, Damian walked in—no longer Dan, but the CEO in full business attire. Grace and the team immediately stood; Rowena was left speechless. Damian addressed her directly, stating he had witnessed her behavior firsthand. When she tried to claim it was all a joke, he firmly reminded her that bullying was never acceptable in his company. Instead of firing her outright, he demoted her, sent her back to training, and instructed her to apologize to every person she mistreated.

In the months that followed, Rowena genuinely changed. Shame, not fear, pushed her to improve. She worked harder, supported new hires, and rebuilt trust. The Sta. Lucia branch soon became one of the best-performing locations with glowing feedback. And the staff never forgot how their CEO once walked among them as a rookie—not to punish, but to restore dignity, respect, and a healthier workplace culture.
