JJ Redick Urges Lakers to Reach “Championship Shape” as Luka Doncic Faces Scrutiny
Though the Los Angeles Lakers’ season has ended, new head coach JJ Redick made it clear during a press conference with GM Rob Pelinka that the offseason is crucial. He emphasized that every player must get into “championship shape” if they hope to contend next year.
Meanwhile, on First Take, analysts questioned Luka Doncic’s conditioning. ESPN’s Brian Windhorst noted,
“The Mavericks knew him best and didn’t believe he could reach top shape.”
However, Stephen A. Smith challenged that take, pointing out the Mavericks’ recent ownership change.
“New ownership didn’t know Luka like Mark Cuban did. Cuban said he wouldn’t have traded him.”
While Redick didn’t name anyone directly, his remarks were perceived by some as a veiled critique of Doncic. The Lakers clearly struggled with stamina—highlighted in Game 4—where both Doncic and LeBron James looked fatigued.
Injuries and illness aside, conditioning remains key. If the Lakers want to go deeper next season, every player must be ready—physically and mentally—from day one.
