Zubaida’s Remarkable Recovery: From Tragedy to Triumph

At just nine years old, Zubaida, a brave girl from Farah, Afghanistan, suffered devastating burns when a kerosene stove exploded. The fire left her with severe injuries to her face, chest, neck, and arms. After limited treatment in Afghanistan and Iran, doctors gave up hope—telling her father to take her home to die.

But her journey was far from over.

In 2002, Zubaida’s father turned to the U.S. military for help. Through a chain of compassion, she was brought to The Grossman Burn Center in California, with support from the Children’s Burn Foundation. Under the care of Dr. Peter Grossman, Zubaida underwent 12 life-changing surgeries.

She didn’t just heal—she thrived. Zubaida learned English, made friends, and even celebrated her first birthday sleepover. Today, she dreams of becoming a pediatric doctor to give back to children like her.

“Zubaida’s strength proves that hope can rise from the ashes.”

Though she’s returned to Afghanistan, her family lives in poverty. Continued support is vital for her education and recovery.
