Verónica Garcia Triumphs Again Amid Controversy in Washington Track Final

On May 31, 17-year-old transgender athlete Verónica Garcia defended her state title in the Class 2A 400-meter race at Mount Tahoma High School, winning with a strong 55.70-second finish. This marked her second consecutive championship—achieved despite public jeers and controversy.

Before the race, Verónica was heckled by a spectator wearing a “Save Women’s Sports” T-shirt. Undeterred, she stayed focused. “It made me angry—not to give up, but to push harder,” she said. After crossing the finish line, she proudly held a sign proclaiming her victory, sending a clear message to critics.

Tensions escalated post-race when runner-up Lauren Matthew misgendered Verónica in a statement expressing frustration about the competition. Verónica responded with grace, stressing resilience and the importance of standing up for her identity: “It’s a shame they have nothing better to do.”

Verónica’s win has reignited the broader debate over trans inclusion in high school sports, but for her, it was a moment of perseverance, pride, and powerful self-affirmation.
