Trump Signals Aggressive Push on Denaturalization
Former President Donald Trump has renewed controversy by suggesting he would revoke U.S. citizenship from some naturalized Americans “in a heartbeat” if given the authority. The remarks have raised alarm among immigrant communities and civil rights groups, who warn that millions could feel vulnerable if such plans move forward.
What Trump Is Proposing
Naturalization allows immigrants to become U.S. citizens by meeting requirements such as age, language ability, and “good moral character.” Despite its long history, Trump has argued the system was abused. In December, he claimed some individuals were improperly naturalized and said, “If I have the power to do it… I would denaturalize, absolutely.”
According to reports, his administration has explored criteria for stripping citizenship, with Trump specifically referencing immigrants from Somalia, saying he believed “many… hate our country.” He indicated others could also be targeted, though no full list was disclosed.
Civil Rights Groups Push Back
The ACLU condemned the idea as “chilling,” warning it creates fear among lawful citizens. Historically, denaturalization is rare—averaging about 11 cases per year—and requires court approval, underscoring how extraordinary such a policy shift would be.
