Why Are Men Shaving Their Eyelashes? A Risky Trend Fueled by ‘Masculine Energy’
Eyelashes aren’t just for looks—they shield the eyes from dust, regulate airflow, and trigger our blink reflex. But a surprising trend is sweeping social media: men trimming or shaving off their lashes to appear “more masculine.”
“Eyelashes are essential for eye health,” says Dr. Vickie Lee of Imperial College London. “Cutting them may cause irritation, dryness, and even injury.”
Videos from barbershops worldwide show men using scissors and clippers near their eyes, despite the clear health risks. This trend reflects a growing movement tied to so-called “masculine energy,” inspired by influencers like Andrew Tate and comments from figures like Mark Zuckerberg.
Even political figures aren’t immune. Senator JD Vance faced online speculation for his thick lashes, with George Santos defending him: “They’re real. Grow up.”
Experts suggest the trend mirrors a broader return to gender traditionalism. As society becomes more polarized, appearance becomes another battleground.
“Eyelashes have become a gender marker,” says Professor Meredith Jones. “When femininity is rejected, even lashes get cut.”
