Why Placing a Glass Upside Down in the Sink Before Vacation Could Save You Trouble

Why You Should Prep Your Sinks Before Leaving for Vacation

When preparing for a trip, most people remember to lock doors, unplug appliances, and secure valuables, but sinks are often forgotten. This small oversight can lead to unpleasant surprises like foul odors, moisture buildup, or even insect infestations. When sinks go unused, the water in the P-trap can evaporate, allowing sewer gases to rise into your home. At the same time, leftover moisture and residue create the perfect environment for gnats, ants, and other pests to enter through drains.

A Simple Trick to Block Odors and Pests

An easy, low-cost solution is to cover each drain with a folded paper towel and place an upside-down glass over it. This creates a physical barrier that prevents gases, insects, and debris from escaping. Before doing so, clean the sink thoroughly, pour hot white vinegar down the drain to dissolve buildup, rinse with warm water, and wipe the area dry. Adding a lemon wipe leaves a fresh scent and boosts cleanliness.

Small Step, Big Difference

This method works for short trips or long vacations and requires nothing more than household items. By prepping your sinks, you return to a home that smells fresh, feels clean, and is free from unwanted pests. Sometimes, the simplest habits make the biggest difference.
