Zohran Mamdani Makes History as NYC’s First Muslim and Youngest Mayor in a Century
Zohran Mamdani has made history, becoming the first Muslim, first South Asian, and youngest mayor of New York City in 100 years. The 34-year-old Democrat secured 50.4% of the vote, defeating Andrew Cuomo with 41.6% and Curtis Sliwa with 7%, according to the BBC.
A proud Democratic socialist, Mamdani’s campaign focused on universal childcare, faster public transit, and higher taxes on the wealthy — policies that resonated deeply with working-class voters. His victory comes despite former President Donald Trump’s public endorsement of Cuomo and warnings that federal funding could be cut if Mamdani won.
During his victory speech, Mamdani addressed Trump directly: “If any place can show a nation betrayed by Donald Trump how to defeat him, it’s the city that created him. So, Donald Trump, since I know you’re watching — turn the volume up.”
Promising to protect tenants, raise taxes on billionaires, and defend immigrant communities, Mamdani declared, “New York was built by immigrants, powered by immigrants — and now, led by one.” He officially takes office January 1.
