Michael Jordan Mourns Mentor George Raveling

Michael Jordan is no stranger to battles on the court, but this week he faced a personal loss. George Raveling, his longtime mentor and friend, passed away at 88 after a battle with cancer.

A Coach, A Connector, A Friend

Raveling’s basketball career spanned decades, serving as head coach at Washington State, Iowa, and USC from 1972 to 1994, before taking on a key role at Nike as global basketball sports marketing director. During his time with Team USA’s Olympic staffs in 1984 and 1988, Raveling built a strong bond with Jordan. He played a pivotal role in history, convincing MJ to sign with Nike and introducing him to Sonny Vaccaro—without whom, Jordan admitted, “there would be no Air Jordan.”

Jordan’s Tribute

“I’m deeply saddened,” Jordan said. “For more than 40 years, he blessed my life with wisdom, encouragement, and friendship. He was a mentor in every sense.”

NBA commissioner Adam Silver also honored Raveling, praising his poise, dignity, and barrier-breaking influence on the game.
