The Science Behind It

According to OB-GYN The Vag Doc on TikTok, vaginal discharge contains natural bacteria, mainly lactobacilli, that keep the vagina healthy. These bacteria create an acidic environment that protects against infections. That same acidity can strip dye from fabric, leaving bleached spots.

“If your discharge is more acidic, it can actually lighten the color of your underwear,” The Vag Doc explained.

Is It a Problem?

Not at all. In fact, it’s usually a sign that your vaginal pH is balanced and healthy. Some women may not notice bleaching — and that’s normal too. Fabric type, color, and dye also play a role.
